Bible Text: Acts 16:6-11 | Preacher: Pastor Mike Gibbons | Series: The Church at the Beginning | It's impossible to overstate the importance for a church of seeking guidance from the Holy Spirit. Why is it, then, that so many churches make plans as if He doesn't exist? The same can be said for us as individual members of the church. We have a mind-boggling resource in the third person of the Trinity, the one Jesus called the Helper. And He wants to help us!

As we continue to move through the book of Acts in our study of the early church, we come to a passage that has three special words for us to describe the ways we can talk about Jesus. Which one is most comfortable for you? Are you looking for those situations where you can share your faith naturally and then taking advantage of them?

Bible Text: Acts 11:1-18 | Preacher: Pastor Mike Gibbons | Series: The Church at the Beginning | Acts 11:17 - this seldom examined verse says it all. If God has revealed something, don’t treat it so lightly...obey it (and Him!). — "If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God's way?"
I have had numerous conversations with fellow believers who have been genuinely distraught and upset at the church for sending money and missionaries to other cultures around the world. They have even tried to pin me with various scripture passages to bolster their side. (That side being that we need to keep all of our money and resources home for our church, our buildings and our facilities.)
God’s word is very clear regarding these matters and the scripture for this week in Acts 11:1-18 really exposes His heart.
As we are examining this text, the real issue might just be the realization that God’s mind has not changed and in light of that fact…How do I personally fit into His plan for getting the gospel to those around me and also to those not around me? Do I have the courage to begin to answer that question?

Bible Text: Acts 6:1-7 | Preacher: Pastor Mike Gibbons | Series: The Church at the Beginning | What topples or ’takes down’ a good church? (Turns out it can be a major item or a lesser one NOT handled well.)
In todays scripture text, Acts 6:1-7, we see an issue develop that could very well splinter this brand new church movement. It was a real issue which required a real answer from the church leadership (the apostles). How did they answer? What did they do? How did they react?
The truth is that they answered this issue and the results were fantastic (v. 7).

Bible Text: Acts 9:31 | Preacher: Pastor Mike Gibbons | Series: The Church at the Beginning | When people generally speak of what they like most about a church, or even what attracted them to a certain church, I usually hear the same things…lively band and music, great facilities, programs for every age group, and an attractive pastor who makes them laugh. (I threw that one in to make you smile!)
Acts 9:31 gives us a whole other description of a church that "does it". Examine this scripture and it just might reprioritize your list for what a genuine church looks like.
With this verse as a background, continue to pray for Candlewood as we fully embrace the house-church model and seek to be a church that resembles this scripture!

Bible Text: Acts 4:1-20 | Preacher: Pastor Mike Gibbons | Series: The Church at the Beginning | Jesus said, “When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.” (Luke 12:11-12)
Jesus said this to the apostles years before it actually happened. In this week’s scripture study from Acts 4:1-20 we see it happening in the lives of Peter and John (after Jesus had ascended). These two, in front of a group of the highest Jewish leadership, experience a boldness that is nothing short of miraculous…and it is the same boldness that we are called to exhibit!
Would you describe your stand and voice for Christ as bold? Do you feel you need to be bolder as you represent Him in the specific place He has put you?
