In verses 22 and 23, Jesus said, "On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’" We need to be sure that we are not doing things for God thinking that we can earn His approval.
Right after Jesus warned us to be cautious when it comes to correcting other people He follows up by saying," Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you." It's commonly accepted that Jesus is telling us to not continue investing in those who continually resist the Gospel.

But look at the context of hypocritically advising others when we are guilty of worse. What if we turn that accusing finger back on ourselves? What if we pause first to make sure we are not ourselves the dogs and pigs Jesus mentioned. When someone points out our errors, do we reject their criticism out of hand, or do we take the time to honestly consider if they are right?
